Barf offers good views across Bassenthwaite. While the eastern face is scree, there are routes up via Beckstones Gill, or from Lord's seat.

The fell is well-known for the "Bishop of Barf", a whitewashed stone marking the spot of the historically questionable tale of the Bishop of Derry's demise after a drunken bet went wrong.
